Petal Native Returns to Inspire Young Athletes
DeCarlos Nicholson, a 2020 graduate of Petal High School, has swapped the quiet streets of Mississippi for the bright lights of the NFL, but his roots remain firmly planted in the community that shaped him.
This summer, Nicholson organized a football camp that drew more than one hundred local student athletes, offering drills that targeted agility, teamwork and decision‑making on the field.
The sessions were not just about physical conditioning; Nicholson emphasized character development, urging participants to dream big and recognize that the sky is the limit for their ambitions.
Nicholson’s own journey reflects that philosophy. After excelling at Petal High, he earned a scholarship at the University of Southern California, where he played for the Trojans before catching the attention of the Cleveland Browns, who signed him as an undrafted free agent on April 25, 2026.
Reflecting on the experience, Nicholson said he hopes to give back to the place that first taught him the value of hard work and perseverance, and he plans to host a fundraiser later this year to support youth sports programs in the area.
Community leaders and parents alike praised the camp for its positive impact, noting that Nicholson’s presence serves as a tangible example that success is attainable regardless of one’s starting point.
