The University of Wisconsin‑Oshkosh announced that former Titan standout Darren Gallagher has been named head coach of the men’s soccer program, a team that has not fielded a varsity side since 2015 and is slated to return to competition in the fall of 2027.
A Coach With a Championship Vision
Gallagher, who earned his degree in the early 2000s and helped the Titans reach the NCAA Division III national semifinals in 2003 under legendary coach Toby Bares, said he is eager to bring that same drive to the revived squad.
His wife, Kristen Gallagher, also a former Titan player, joins the alumni network that has been vocal about the program’s comeback, adding a personal touch to the excitement surrounding the announcement.
In a recent interview, Gallagher outlined his ambition to win a national championship and to use the transfer portal strategically to assemble a roster that can compete immediately.
He emphasized that the program will aim to be competitive from day one, setting high expectations for players and staff alike.
Toby Bares, who served on the search committee that selected Gallagher, praised the former player’s passion, commitment, and coaching acumen, stating that he believes Gallagher is the right leader to build a successful program.
Gallagher’s previous stint as head coach at Division III Mount St. Joseph University gave him experience that the administration hopes will translate into success at Oshkosh, where he previously played under Bares and helped the team advance deep into the national tournament.
