Fort Hood, the sprawling Army installation in central Texas, became the site of the first professional football game ever played on a U.S. military installation, featuring the Dallas Renegades and the Orlando Storm of the United Football League.
The contest, dubbed “Hats off to Heroes,” offered free admission to service members holding Department of War ID cards and handed the first 2,000 fans a complimentary Dallas Renegades cap, turning the stadium into a festive gathering for troops and their families.
Pregame festivities included face‑painting booths, personalized bandanas, a rock‑climbing wall and static displays of Army vehicles, while the 1st Cavalry Division Band rendered the national anthem and Lt. Gen. Kevin D. Admiral presented the game ball and conducted the coin toss.
Dallas Renegades quarterback Austin Reed later praised the unique opportunity, saying it was an honor to bring the team to a military base, while Orlando Storm head coach Anthony Becht called the event a blessing and lauded the passionate military fans.
Orlando Storm emerged victorious with a 31‑24 win, securing a playoff berth and underscoring the competitive spirit of the league. Staff Sgt. Edward Geyer highlighted the game’s morale‑boosting effect for military families, and Col. Brian Green of the United States Army commended the UFL for bringing the sport to the troops.
Command Sgt. Maj. Loyd Rhoades echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the positive impact on the Fort Hood community, while family members like Jenny Taft enjoyed the day’s activities alongside their service‑member partners.
Beyond the scoreboard, the event showcased a blend of sport and service, with players such as Jake Butt and Seth Green participating in community outreach, and businessman Mike Repole, a noted supporter of the league, watching from the stands.
