Fort Worth’s public spaces are set to become a vibrant canvas this summer as a collection of artist‑designed soccer balls takes center stage in anticipation of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The initiative, spearheaded by local artist Brenda Melgoza Ciardiello, features a ball titled “One Planet, One People, One America” that will be unveiled at Sundance Square Plaza on May 23 and remain on view through June 7.
A community‑driven canvas
The project brings together a roster of North Texas creators, each contributing a unique visual interpretation on a shared spherical surface. Austin‑based Hailey Gearo‑Chang paid homage to “SpongeBob SquarePants” in her design, while the round format presented a distinct set of technical challenges for the painters, who had to adapt their techniques to a curved plane.
Soccer takes over Sundance Square
Sundance Square’s art director Sarah Ayala described the balls as joyful, highly visible, and deeply local, noting that they embody the district’s eclectic spirit. The artwork will not remain confined to a single plaza; after its initial display, the balls will be relocated across the 37‑block neighborhood, extending the reach of the celebration.
Artistic collaboration
Ayala emphasized that the balls serve as a unifying symbol, reflecting the tournament’s theme of global togetherness while spotlighting homegrown talent. The collaborative nature of the project has fostered a sense of shared ownership among the participating artists, who have each infused personal narratives into the collective piece.
In addition to the visual display, Sundance Square will broadcast all 104 international matches on massive screens throughout the plaza as part of its “Summer of Soccer” programming. Daily watch parties will be enhanced by food trucks, bars, and DJs, creating a festive atmosphere that blends sport, cuisine, and music.
The culmination of the initiative will be a series of events that run concurrently with the World Cup, offering residents and visitors alike an immersive experience that celebrates both athletic competition and cultural expression. By integrating art, sport, and community engagement, the project aims to leave a lasting imprint on Fort Worth’s urban landscape.
