Four-star defensive lineman Xavier Muhammad, a standout from Houston, Texas, announced his commitment to the University of Michigan on Wednesday, ending a recruiting chase that had drawn attention from several power programs.
A Commitment That Reshapes the Board
Muhammad, ranked No. 12 among Texas prospects and No. 102 nationally by the Rivals Industry Ranking, said the decision came after a weekend visit to Ann Arbor that left a lasting impression of the Wolverines' coaching staff and campus culture.
The early pledge marks a departure from his original timeline; he had planned to wait until later in the recruitment cycle but felt the connection with Michigan was too compelling to delay.
While at Michigan, he will join fellow defensive linemen Recarder Kitchen and Jayce Brewer, both of whom committed last weekend, giving the Wolverines a trio of elite prospects along the line for the 2027 class.
Muhammad’s decision also means he is likely to forgo official visits to Stanford, Houston, Miami and TCU, schools that had been on his radar alongside Notre Dame, Arizona State, Vanderbilt and Kentucky.
Impact on the 2027 Class
The commitment brings Michigan’s total pledges in the 2027 cycle to nine, underscoring a busy period for the program as it builds a foundation for the next era.
Analysts note that the early commitments could influence other recruits’ timelines, potentially reshaping the balance of power in the upcoming class.
For Xavier Muhammad, the next steps involve preparing for his official visit scheduled for June 19, known as Victor’s Weekend, where he will get an extended look at the Wolverines’ facilities and coaching staff.
