Franco Baresi, the legendary AC Milan centre‑back and Italy international, died on Saturday at the age of 66. Tributes poured in from former teammates, coaches and fans who remembered his calm authority at the heart of one of football’s most dominant sides.
Born on a modest farm near Travagliato, Brescia, Baresi grew up playing barefoot with his siblings to preserve the family’s single pair of shoes. The makeshift pitches of his childhood forged a deep love for the ball that would later carry him to the highest echelons of the sport.
His talent was first recognised by the parish club USO, a modest outfit founded by a priest and a local businessman. After impressing in youth ranks, he made his Serie A debut for Milan at 17 in 1978, quickly establishing himself as a prodigious talent.
Milan’s Golden Era
Under coaches Nils Liedholm and Arrigo Sacchi, Baresi became a cornerstone of a Milan side that captured six Scudetti and three European Cups. The club’s resurgence after the 1980 Totonero scandal saw him lift the league title in 1979 and later lead the team to back‑to‑back European Cups in 1989 and 1990.
His vision, anticipation and ability to read the game made him a favourite of both teammates and opponents alike. Former manager Nils Liedholm once described him as the player who could ‘see the whole field before the ball even arrived.’
On the international stage, Baresi contributed to Italy’s 1982 World Cup triumph and featured in the 1994 final against Brazil, playing the full 90 minutes despite injury concerns. His performances earned admiration from unlikely quarters, including filmmaker Werner Herzog, who praised the defender’s tactical intelligence.
After 20 seasons, he retired in 1997 following an Achilles rupture, leaving behind a legacy that many argue deserves a Ballon d’Or. Though he never received the award, his influence endures in the way modern defenders approach positioning and leadership.
