Frank Hawkins, the rushing legend who still holds the Nevada record books, is set to join the Big Sky Conference’s 2026 Hall of Fame class, a tribute that underscores his enduring impact on college football.
A trailblazer’s college dominance
From 1977 to 1980 Hawkins wore the Wolf Pack uniform and seized the Big Sky’s rushing crown in each of his final two seasons, delivering 3,402 yards in that span. His career culminated with 5,333 rushing yards — a school‑record that still stands — and helped Nevada claim the conference’s first Division I‑AA playoff berth in 1979.
The NFL next called, and Hawkins answered with the Oakland Raiders, contributing to the franchise’s Super Bowl XVIII victory in 1984. In the league he amassed 1,659 yards and 15 touchdowns, cementing his reputation as a clutch performer on the biggest stages.
Beyond the gridiron, Hawkins transitioned into public service, becoming the first elected Black official in Las Vegas and later serving on the Las Vegas City Council. His civic work has shaped community programs and inspired a generation of leaders.
The induction ceremony will take place on July 25 at 6:30 p.m. in Spokane, Washington, where Hawkins will be joined by seven other honorees from across the conference. This moment marks a historic milestone: he will be the first Nevada athlete ever enshrined in the Big Sky Hall of Fame.
