Franklin High School’s baseball squad entered the season with modest expectations, but sophomore right-hander Anthony Ficco has turned those expectations on their head. After a preseason stint on the junior varsity, Ficco earned a promotion and quickly proved his mettle on the mound.
A Shutout Streak Takes Hold
His latest outing was a 3-0 victory over Hopkinton, where he limited the opposition to just two hits and two walks while striking out three. The performance marked his second consecutive shutout, extending a streak that now spans over 17 innings of scoreless baseball.
Coach Zach Brown has repeatedly praised Ficco’s old‑school pitching approach, noting his ability to change speeds and induce contact. The pitcher’s composure under pressure has drawn admiration not only from the coaching staff but also from teammates who watch his calm demeanor in tight moments.
Ficco’s journey to the varsity rotation was not linear. Early in the preseason he struggled for consistency and was sent back to the junior varsity to rebuild his command. There, he honed his ability to pitch to contact, racking up innings and confidence that later translated into varsity success.
Postseason Implications
The Panthers’ recent wins have secured a spot in the Pedroli Classic championship game, a testament to Ficco’s impact on the team’s depth and resilience. His presence adds a reliable arm to a pitching staff that now boasts both starter and reliever options, giving Franklin a strategic edge as the postseason progresses.
