Nebraska basketball coach Fred Hoiberg is entering his second full season back at the helm with a clear vision: to reshape the Cornhuskers into a competitive force for the 2026‑27 campaign. His excitement is palpable, not only because of the program’s recent deep NCAA Tournament run but also because of the work he and his staff have done to address the roster’s needs.
A Wave of New Faces
The Huskers have added eight new players for the upcoming season, five of whom arrived via the transfer portal. These acquisitions are intended to replace the most productive class in school history, bringing a mix of experience and upside that Hoiberg believes can sustain the team’s momentum.
Among the returnees, Pryce Sandfort and Braden Frager stand out as All‑Big Ten honorees. Both are expected to shoulder leadership responsibilities alongside Cale Jacobsen and Connor Essegian, who are slated to play pivotal roles in the upcoming rotation.
Injury concerns linger, however. Connor Essegian finished the previous season with a season‑ending injury but has applied for a medical waiver that could grant him an additional year of eligibility. Sandfort and Essegian are currently recovering, but Hoiberg expects them to be fully available for the start of the season.
Scheduling Hurdles
One of the most pressing challenges for Nebraska is constructing a non‑conference slate that includes high‑major opponents. The Huskers are still working to arrange a home‑and‑home series with a top‑tier team, and their current schedule features matchups against Providence and Boise State. An exhibition opener against Saint Louis is set for October 9, followed by a trip to BYU on October 16.
Inside the Big Ten, Nebraska will face a gauntlet of traditional powers, including Minnesota, Ohio State, Rutgers, UCLA, USC, Indiana and Michigan. Home‑and‑home series are also slated against Iowa, Penn State and Michigan State, promising a rigorous conference schedule that will test the team’s depth and resilience.
Beyond the X’s and O’s, Hoiberg has emphasized the importance of high character in the new roster. The blend of veteran leadership, fresh talent and a disciplined culture aims to keep the Huskers competitive both on and off the court as they chase a promising future.
