Brockton to Host 21st Annual Gospel Youth Basketball Tournament
The Free The Captives Ministry, in partnership with the UHOPE Foundation, will stage its 21st annual 3‑on‑3 Gospel Youth Basketball Tournament and Community Carnival on June 27 at Danny Goodwin Memorial Park in Brockton, Massachusetts. The event, now in its third decade, draws participants from across the region for a day of sport, fellowship and mentorship.
Open to youth ages 10 through 22, the tournament features divisions for skill level, a three‑point shooting contest, a slam‑dunk competition and team play that culminates in trophies, medals and assorted prizes. Organizers have arranged a full slate of activities for families, including bounce houses, face painting, live music, food vendors and games that cater to all ages.
Mentorship and Spiritual Growth at the Core
Pastor James Wade, chairman of Free The Captives Ministry, says the gathering is more than a basketball showcase; it is an opportunity to encourage young people, surround them with positive role models and share the transformative power of faith. “Our mission is to empower at‑risk youth, adults and families through mentorship, outreach and community engagement,” he explains.
Founded in Brockton over two decades ago, Free The Captives Ministry has grown into a regional nonprofit that blends spiritual guidance with practical support. By partnering with local organizations and faith leaders, the ministry seeks to strengthen neighborhoods and create lasting pathways for personal development.
The event underscores the collaborative spirit of Massachusetts’ community groups, bringing together churches, schools and civic leaders to celebrate youth talent while fostering a spirit of service. Residents are invited to attend the free carnival and cheer on the next generation of athletes.
