A free youth football and cheerleading camp in Westbury celebrated its 20th anniversary this summer, drawing roughly 80 children between the ages of five and thirteen for four days of instruction. The program, organized by East Meadow PAL, combined skill drills, relay races and beginner cheerleading stunts with lessons on teamwork and perseverance.
A community‑driven program
Alex Rivas, a 2007 Newsday Thorp Award winner, directed the camp and emphasized sharing his knowledge with the next generation of athletes. Long‑time volunteer John Spirou, who has been involved for over four decades, highlighted the camp’s focus on academics alongside athletics, while East Meadow coach Matt Castaneda praised the campers’ enthusiasm and return year after year.
Varsity players from East Meadow High School and Clarke High School served as instructors, guiding campers through positional drills and small‑game scenarios. Clarke coach Joe Roche enjoyed seeing former camp participants now mentoring younger athletes, and Rocco Riccobono, a Clarke sophomore linebacker, volunteered to continue the mentorship cycle that shaped his own experience.
Cheerleading sessions, led by Clarke senior Jessica Martinez, allowed participants to practice cheers, dances and basic stunts, building confidence that was evident during the closing ceremony. Campers repeated daily mottos such as “Never Quit,” “All In,” and “Finish Strong,” reinforcing a culture of resilience and collective effort.
Looking ahead
The success of the camp was attributed to collaboration among district officials, PAL leaders, athletic directors, coaches and dozens of volunteers. As the program moves forward, organizers hope to expand its reach while maintaining the core values that have defined two decades of community building.
