A Promising Start
Carter Kessler arrived in Morgantown in January, bringing a 6‑foot‑2, 250‑pound frame that immediately caught the attention of the West Virginia coaching staff. As a freshman defensive lineman, he entered the program with a three‑star rating from 247Sports, a testament to his high school pedigree.
Coaches have earmarked Kessler for a reserve role on the defensive line, a strategic placement that allows him to acclimate to the speed and complexity of Division I play while still contributing on special teams.
High School Highlights
At Shelby High, Kessler’s dual‑position skill set made him a matchup nightmare. He combined size with agility, racking up tackles and receptions that drew praise from regional scouts and helped his team secure a deep playoff run.
His accolades included First Team All‑State honors and an offensive player of the year award in Division 4, underscoring the impact he had on the field before stepping onto the Mountaineers’ campus.
