J.J. Buchanan arrived on campus as a true freshman with a modest résumé, but his transition from tight end to receiver during his first year quickly rewrote expectations. He finished the season with 26 catches for 427 yards and five touchdowns, numbers that hinted at a player ready to shoulder more responsibility.
Coaches Take Notice
Position coach Micah Simon has repeatedly emphasized Buchanan’s leadership, noting that the youngster’s presence has already altered the dynamics of the receiver room. Head coach Kyle Whittingham went further, describing Buchanan as "borderline unguardable" during fall camp and praising his ability to command attention on the field.
Buchanan’s basketball background adds a distinctive edge to his route running. The skills honed on the hardwood translate into sharper timing and body control, especially in contested 50‑50 situations where his athleticism shines.
A New Look for the Receiver Corps
The Wolverines' passing attack is expected to revolve around Buchanan and fellow freshman Travis Johnson, both of whom are slated to see extensive snaps as the coaching staff diversifies its offensive options. Their emergence signals a shift toward a more dynamic receiving group.
Game Preview
Fans will get their first live glimpse of Buchanan when Michigan hosts Western Michigan at Michigan Stadium on September 5. The matchup offers a tangible measure of the freshman’s readiness and could set the tone for his role in the upcoming season.
With early indications suggesting that Buchanan will be a central figure in the offense, the Wolverines' supporters have good reason to be optimistic about the young player's potential to influence games early in his collegiate career.
