Indiana University’s men’s basketball team opened its preseason with a convincing 98-64 victory over College Jean-de-Brébeuf on Tuesday night, a performance that highlighted the Hoosiers’ depth and set an upbeat tone for the upcoming campaign.
Freshmen Make Immediate Impact
Coach Darian DeVries emptied the bench early, rotating nine scholarship players and watching six of them finish in double figures. Every available scholarship athlete recorded at least one made field goal, underscoring the team’s collective contribution.
Among the standout newcomers were true freshmen Prince‑Alexander Moody, Trevor Manhertz and Vaughn Karvala, each of whom played a pivotal role in the offensive onslaught and demonstrated the potential that earned them four‑star recruiting ratings.
Moody, a Maryland product who signed with IU as a four‑star guard, erupted for 13 points in the second half, added a game‑high five steals and played with a swagger that drew a grin from his coach.
Manhertz, a North Carolina recruit who still has work to do on his physique, proved his confidence by knocking down two three‑pointers en route to 10 points, displaying a feel for the game that excited the coaching staff.
DeVries praised the freshmen’s effort and composure, noting that the bench outscored the opposition 43‑11 in the fourth quarter, a clear indicator that the team’s depth will be a major asset moving forward.
