Fresno City College appoints new football and soccer coaches amid retirements

Josh Brown and David Santesteban step into leadership roles after legendary mentors depart

Fresno City College announced this week that Josh Brown will take the reins of the Rams football program, while David Santesteban has been named head coach of the men’s soccer team, marking a swift transition after the retirements of longtime mentors Tony Caviglia and Eric Solberg.

A new era for Rams athletics

Brown arrives with a résumé that includes stints as co‑defensive coordinator at Sacramento State and defensive coordinator at Cal Poly, and he previously played at Gavilan College before moving on to Oklahoma; his first head‑coaching appointment reflects a draw to the program’s storied tradition.

Santesteban, a former Ram who played under Bill Neal in the mid‑1980s, returns after a distinguished coaching career that spans Southwestern Community College in Oregon, San Jacinto College in Houston and a Final Four run with the University of the Virgin Islands; his 177‑66‑30 record as a collegiate head coach underscores his capability.

Athletic director Derrick Johnson praised the duo, saying their leadership and experience align with the college’s ambition to sustain excellence on the field and the pitch.

The departures of Caviglia and Solberg leave sizable shoes to fill; Caviglia exits with a 200‑82 record, while Solberg guided the Rams to two state championships, legacies that both new coaches hope to build upon.

Both Brown and Santesteban have expressed personal ties to the institution, with Santesteban noting that finishing his career at Fresno City College has long been a dream, and Brown citing the program’s historic success as a key factor in his decision.
