From Defensive Tackle to Mentor: DeAngelo Brown’s Journey in Football Development

A Savannah native turns his playing pedigree into a training empire for the next generation

A Star's Second Act

DeAngelo Brown, once a dominant defensive tackle at Savannah Christian, has swapped his pads for a whistle and a personal training business that is reshaping how young linemen approach the game.

In high school he led his team to a state championship in 2011 and earned All‑ACC honors two years later at Louisville, where he was also named to the Cardinals All‑Decade team.

Though he signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent, Brown never appeared in a regular‑season game, a setback that fueled his pivot toward coaching.

Building a Mobile Gym

In 2018 he launched DB97 Personal and Athletic Training, a mobile gym service that brings strength and conditioning sessions directly to athletes across Savannah and beyond.

His clientele includes top defensive linemen and linebackers, many of whom have gone on to make impacts at programs such as the University of Georgia, Texas Tech and others.

Among the notable players he works with are UGA’s Elijah Griffin and Texas Tech’s LaDamion Guyton, both of whom he tracks through HUDL film to fine‑tune their development.

Brown’s meticulous approach extends to reviewing performance metrics, ensuring each athlete receives data‑driven feedback that bridges practice and game.

His contributions have been recognized with multiple honors, including the Savannah Morning News Defensive Player of the Year award and inductions into both the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame and the Savannah Christian Athletic Hall of Fame in 2023.

Former coach Donald Chumley has praised Brown’s dedication, knowledge and expertise, noting that “his passion for the sport is evident in every session he leads.”

Beyond the field, Brown takes pride in giving back to his community, using his platform to mentor young athletes and promote the sport he loves.

With a growing roster of talent under his guidance, Brown continues to blend his playing pedigree with a modern training philosophy that is producing some of the country’s most promising defensive prospects.
