Kelli McGroarty, a 2020 graduate of Eastern High School in New Jersey, has become the headline scorer for the Essendon Royals in Melbourne’s Victoria Premier League. After completing her studies at the University of Iowa, she traded the familiar fields of the United States for a new challenge on the other side of the world.
The move was motivated by a love of the game and a fascination with international cultures. Upon arrival, McGroarty confronted a language barrier and the practicalities of securing employment, hurdles that only sharpened her determination to succeed on the pitch.
In just 21 appearances she has netted 25 goals, a rate that places her at the summit of the league’s scoring charts. Her performances have not only elevated the Royals’ profile but also forged a close bond with the club’s youth academy, where she is regarded as a mentor and a role model.

Looking ahead, McGroarty is weighing options that include a step into the A‑League or a transition into coaching. Her academic background — a degree in communication studies with a minor in sports and recreation management — provides a solid foundation for any path she chooses.
