After graduating from high school, Krysta Ansell hung up her playing stick and stepped away from the forward position she had loved since childhood. The end of her playing days did not mark the end of her connection to hockey; it simply redirected her energy toward a different role on the rink.
Finding a New Calling
While working as a scorekeeper at a local arena, she crossed paths with the region’s official scheduler. That encounter sparked a curiosity about the mechanics of the game from a different angle, and she soon earned her licensing as an international referee.
Her first taste of officiating came at modest local games, but the experience quickly grew into a passion. She relished the competitive edge that remained from her playing days, even as she embraced the fresh perspective that comes from judging rather than participating.
Ansell’s talent earned her assignments at high‑profile events, including the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship Division I in Poland and the 2026 Chipotle‑USA Hockey Youth Tier I 14U National Championship in Plymouth, Michigan. Each assignment reinforced her belief that officiating could open doors to a broader career within the sport.
Dreams of the Olympic Stage
Guided by a clear ambition, she now targets a spot at the Olympic Games, a goal that drives her preparation for upcoming IIHF tournaments. The officiating community’s supportive atmosphere fuels her progress, while she also spends time mentoring younger players, hoping to inspire them to consider refereeing as a viable path.
Beyond personal achievement, Ansell views her role as an educator, using every game to highlight the nuances of hockey’s rules and the importance of fair play. She encourages anyone interested to give officiating a try, believing that a deeper understanding of the sport enriches both players and fans alike.
