A Dual Legacy of Competition and Collaboration
Lizzy Groetsch, a former Division I basketball captain, now applies the discipline and strategic thinking honed on the court to her role as an analyst on Macquarie Capital’s Industrials team.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, she earned a degree in Finance and Operations with a focus on Information and Decisions, where coursework in artificial intelligence equipped her with tools to tackle complex business challenges.
Her fascination with finance ignited during a corporate finance internship at U.S. Steel, where she observed a legacy industrial firm leveraging mergers and acquisitions to reinvent itself, sparking a desire to play a part in that evolution.
Groetsch spent four seasons with the Penn Quakers, starting every game in the 2023–24 campaign and earning captaincy for the 2024–25 season, experiences that forged a tight‑knit work ethic and a knack for leading diverse teams.
She first crossed paths with Macquarie through Penn Athletics sponsorships, notably when Palestra was branded as Macquarie Court, a partnership that introduced her to the firm’s culture of collaboration and community.
Today, as an analyst on the Industrials team, she advises clients in industrial and environmental services, chemicals and materials, crafting valuation models, marketing materials and presentations that distill sector trends and competitive landscapes.
Her work is amplified by close collaboration with the infrastructure advisory group, where combined expertise on industrial and environmental services yields richer insights for clients, while mentorship programs and weekly technical sessions sharpen her modeling skills.
Beyond the spreadsheets, Groetsch channels the camaraderie of her analyst cohort into initiatives that foster culture and mentorship, recently joining the Analyst and Associate Advisory Board and networking on Macquarie’s terrace overlooking Fifth Avenue.
Looking ahead, she aims to deepen her financial modeling capabilities and broaden sector knowledge, while encouraging aspiring professionals to converse with industry veterans to uncover what truly fulfills or challenges them in their careers.
She also champions the responsible use of AI, leveraging its ability to accelerate research and streamline analysis, yet always verifies AI‑generated outputs to ensure accuracy.
