From the Ice to the Office: Isaac Barchus’ Story of Grit and Giving

A UNO alumnus turns rare disease challenges into a platform for community impact.

Isaac Barchus stepped onto the graduation stage at the University of Nebraska Omaha clutching a Business Administration degree, a milestone made sweeter by years of navigating a rare auto‑inflammatory condition known as CANDLE Syndrome. Diagnosed as a child, he endured multiple knee and back surgeries, yet he found a constant refuge in Baxter Arena, the home of the UNO men’s hockey team, where he first joined as an honorary captain through the Team IMPACT program at age 13.

Hockey: More Than a Game

Over the years he evolved from a symbolic captain to a student operations manager, a role that allowed him to contribute behind the scenes while the coach, Mike Gabinet, highlighted his work ethic and dedication as exemplary for teammates and staff alike. The arena has become his second home, a place where he has cherished every moment of competition and camaraderie.

Beyond the rink, Barchus served on the Executive Board of his fraternity Delta Chi and leveraged his platform to raise $10,300 for the Ronald McDonald House and the V Foundation, channeling his personal experience into tangible support for families facing medical hardships.

Looking Ahead

As he charts his next chapter, Barchus plans to remain in sports operations while eyeing an MBA at UNO, hoping to blend his operational insights with strategic leadership to further enrich the arena that has become his second home.
