Jalen Mayo’s path to the University of Houston began far from the spotlight. Coming out of high school he had no scholarship offers, a hurdle that could have ended his football dreams before they started.
He started at Virginia Union, a Division II program in Hampton, Virginia, where his presence helped the team capture back‑to‑back CIAA championships in 2023 and 2024.
Championship roots
During his tenure at Stephen F. Austin State University he recorded four interceptions and eight pass breakups, earning honorable‑mention All‑American recognition and drawing the eye of several Power Five programs.
A new chapter
A standout performance against the Cougars impressed the Houston coaching staff, and when his longtime mentor Marcus Trice joined the staff, Mayo committed to the university. He signed with Houston, eager to test himself in a Power Five conference.
Teammates and coaches have repeatedly praised his work ethic and leadership. Defensive coordinator Willie Fritz highlighted Mayo’s mentality, while teammate Jordan Allen noted his quiet confidence on the field.
Award pursuit
Now slated to start at cornerback, Mayo’s primary goal is to win the Jim Thorpe Award, given annually to the nation’s top defensive back, as he continues to prove himself in the Big 12.
