FSU Basketball Training Center Receives $5 Million State Funding for Upgrades

Legislative allocation aims to address growing infrastructure debt as athletics expenses surge

A Strategic Investment in Seminole Basketball

The Florida Legislature has earmarked $5 million to refurbish the Florida State University Basketball Training Center, a facility that serves both the men’s and women’s programs. The allocation is part of a broader state budget that lawmakers are set to approve before it reaches Governor Ron DeSantis.

The arena, which opened in April 2002 and spans roughly 40,000 square feet, houses two full‑size courts, modern locker rooms and office space. Since its inception the center has been the daily training ground for the Seminoles, and its recent wear and tear has prompted the university to seek state assistance for repairs and upgrades.

FSU’s athletics department is currently projecting expenses to surpass $250 million in fiscal year 2027, a milestone that would mark a record for the program. With $437 million in debt, the department is described by Vice President and Athletics Director Michael Alford as carrying an “infrastructural debt” rather than a survival‑level burden.

Coach Luke Loucks, in his debut season, posted an 18‑15 record, while women’s coach Brooke Wyckoff compiled a 90‑60 tally over five seasons before the team’s streak of consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances was interrupted last year. The funding, officials say, will be directed toward venue repairs and renovations to ensure the facility remains competitive.
