The university’s athletics department confirmed the agreement on Thursday, noting that Smith will remain at the helm of the Texans through the 2031 campaign. The extension reflects a mutual commitment to building on the momentum generated over the past three seasons.
Under Smith’s guidance, the team captured two conference tournament titles, secured a regular-season conference championship, and earned a berth in the NCAA Regionals. His 2026 honor as WAC Coach of the Year capped a season that also featured the program’s third-most wins in a single year and an outright WAC regular-season crown.
A Milestone Season
The Texans also marked a milestone by winning their first NCAA postseason game since 2014, defeating UC Santa Barbara 11-5, and became the first reclassifying Division I institution to claim a conference tournament title. Smith’s overall record now stands at 94-82, with two 30-plus win seasons achieved in just three years.
University President Dr. James Hurley praised the coach’s impact, stating that the extension “affirms our belief in a bright future for Texans baseball.” Athletic Director Steve Uryasz added that the program’s recent successes have heightened excitement among players, alumni, and fans alike.
