Funding impasse threatens Chicago Street Race
NASCAR’s ambition to revive the downtown lakefront street race next spring has hit an unexpected roadblock. The organization had been gearing up for a high‑profile return to Chicago’s lakefront, but the prospect now hinges on a state subsidy that has yet to be secured.
Illinois legislators have so far allocated only $5 million toward the event, a figure that matches the grant NASCAR received before it shifted its 2026 dates to Joliet. The racing body had been eyeing a much larger $15 million tourism grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity, a sum that would help offset the substantial costs of staging a street‑level spectacle.
Missed press moment
Early June was slated to be the moment when local officials and dignitaries would announce the comeback. Instead, the announcement never materialized, and no new date has been set. The delay forced political leaders and other stakeholders to reconsider their participation, leaving the planned press conference in limbo.
With NASCAR required to lock in its 2027 schedule by August, the window to resolve the funding dispute is closing fast. If negotiations with the state drag on, the Chicago Street Race could lose its place on the calendar, a scenario that would be a blow to the city’s sports tourism agenda.
NASCAR chief operating officer Ben Kennedy has confirmed that the series is engaged in separate discussions with both Joliet and Chicago as it seeks to preserve a Midwest presence. While the Chicago option remains on the table, its future now depends on the outcome of the subsidy talks.
