Gabby Lisella, who has been a fixture at Rowan University for nearly three decades, announced this week that she will retire effective July 1, bringing to a close a 26‑year tenure that blended coaching excellence with administrative leadership.
A career defined by service and success
Lisella first made her mark on the court, guiding the university’s women’s basketball program for 19 seasons and compiling a 260‑win record that included a memorable run to the 2015‑16 NCAA Division III Second Round. The following year, her squad earned the D3hoops.com Atlantic Region Coach of the Year honor, a testament to her strategic acumen and player development.
Beyond the hardwood, she spent the last seven years as associate athletic director, overseeing facilities and game‑management operations. Among her proudest projects was the construction of the new Student‑Athlete Weight Room in Esby Gym, a state‑of‑the‑art facility that reflects her commitment to enhancing the student‑athlete experience.
Her influence extended to governance as well. Lisella served on the NCAA Division III Regional Advisory Committee and contributed to WBCA selection committees, helping shape policies that affect Division III athletics nationwide.
Prior to Rowan, she honed her craft at Oswego State, the University of the South and St. Lawrence University, gaining a breadth of experience that enriched her later work. A graduate of East Stroudsburg University, she remains a proud alumna who played both basketball and volleyball at the collegiate level.
