Gabe Gross Exits Auburn Staff for Family Focus
Gabe Gross, who spent nine years shaping Auburn’s hitting approach as the program’s hitting coach, announced his departure from the staff this week, citing a desire to devote more time to his family.
The move comes as Gross transitions into a new position as special assistant for athletics engagement within the athletic department, a role that will let him stay connected to the program while balancing home life.
Auburn head coach Butch Thompson praised Gross’s contributions, noting that the team will begin the search for a successor before the 2027 season, aiming to preserve the offensive momentum Gross helped build.
During his tenure, Gross worked closely with some of the program’s most potent sluggers, including Ike Irish, Sonny DiChiara and Cooper McMurray, all of whom honed their swing under his guidance.
His impact is reflected in the draft pipeline: 13 position players have been selected in the MLB draft since 2018, a testament to his ability to develop raw talent into professional prospects.
The roster heading into the next season looks poised to retain several key bats such as Chase Fralick, Ethin Bingaman, Mason McCraine and Bub Terrell, while the team has also added speed through transfers Ben Swails from Iowa and John Beverely from Georgia State.
Auburn Athletics, the university’s sports arm, will continue to build on the foundation laid by Gross, with the athletic department expressing confidence in the program’s trajectory.
