The Gadsden Times has unveiled its 2026 All-Area boys soccer team, a tribute to the athletes and mentors who defined a memorable season across the state. Selections were based on each player’s contribution to team success, from defensive heroics to offensive firepower.
Player of the Year: Jessai Lopez
Freshman goalkeeper Jessai Lopez of Gadsden City earned the Player of the Year award after an extraordinary defensive stretch that saw his side concede only 16 goals while he recorded 60 saves. His composure between the posts set a tone for the team’s overall stability.
Coach of the Year: Samantha Coker
Samantha Coker, the head coach of Gadsden City, was named Coach of the Year for steering her squad to the Final Four and a state title game appearance. Her strategic acumen and ability to rally young talent were cited as key factors in the team’s deep playoff run.
Senior forward Brandon Manganaris from Guntersville added 45 goals and 19 assists, propelling his team to the Elite Eight. Meanwhile, Braulio Zavala, a senior forward from Susan Moore, netted 57 goals and was instrumental in capturing the Class 1‑3A state championship.
Collinsville’s freshman midfielder John Paul Barrientos contributed 39 goals and 13 assists, while Joseph East, a senior midfielder from Coosa Christian, scored 46 goals and helped his team record its first postseason victory.
Southside’s senior midfielder Trek Gardner posted 10 goals and 10 assists, showcasing a balanced offensive impact. From Susan Moore, sophomore midfielder Francisco Piceno tallied 33 goals and 39 assists, a combination that drove his team to another state championship.
Defensive standouts were also recognized. Jorge Cantellano, a defender from Coosa Christian, added four goals and nine assists, while Yensi Flamenco, a senior defender from Collinsville, logged 30 steals and five assists.
Statewide Impact
The breadth of talent highlighted by the All-Area team reflects a vibrant high school soccer landscape throughout Alabama. From emerging freshmen to seasoned seniors, each honoree contributed to a narrative of growth, competition, and community pride that will shape the next generation of players.
