Gainesville High School’s head football coach Neil Searcy was handed a season‑long suspension this week after an investigation uncovered that players had been allowed to train in full protective gear during offseason workouts.
The violations emerged from a series of six one‑hour morning sessions in May, during which athletes wore helmets, shoulder pads and shorts, a combination that directly contravenes University Interscholastic League regulations on equipment usage.
In response, the UIL State Executive Committee imposed a suite of sanctions: a full season ban for Searcy, three years of probation for the program, and a public reprimand that was released to the media.

The penalties also included an initial four‑practice suspension for the team and a loss in a preseason scrimmage, highlighting the tangible impact of the infractions on competitiveness.
During the hearing, Searcy acknowledged that he had erred, describing the oversight as a lapse in judgment rather than an intentional rule breach.
The school district has yet to name an interim head coach, leaving the Leopards to navigate the remainder of the season under a cloud of uncertainty.
