The Las Cruces Sun-News has announced the winners of its 2026 reader‑chosen awards for the best baseball and softball players in the region, revealing a clear consensus among voters. The poll, which ran from May 26 through June 14, collected more than 15,000 ballots.
Garcia’s Season of Excellence
Matthew Garcia, a senior outfielder for Mayfield, captured 5,767 votes, representing 50.02% of the total and edging out Organ Mountain’s Ryo Rivera, who received 4,707 ballots. Garcia’s statistical line was equally striking: he batted .343, posted a .371 slugging percentage, reached base 49.5% of the time, and drove in 14 runs. He also logged two doubles, maintained a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage, and earned a first‑team All‑District 3‑5A selection and a "Team Gold Glove" honor. His contributions helped the Trojans finish the season at 20‑8‑1 overall and 11‑4 in district play, culminating in a quarterfinal appearance in the 5A playoffs.
Gillespie’s Dominance on the Diamond
Jadelyn Gillespie of Hatch Valley was named the top softball player, earning 9,405 votes, or 38.97% of the tally. She batted .379, posted a 1.053 OPS, and recorded 13 RBIs, six doubles and two triples. Her versatility and consistent performance placed her ahead of Las Cruces High’s Krista Barela, who gathered 8,199 votes. Gillespie’s season highlighted a Bears team that ranked among the most productive in the area.
Recognition Beyond the Field
Both awardees have been celebrated not only for their on‑field achievements but also for their community impact. Garcia was selected as the Las Cruces Sun-News El Paso Children’s Hospital Athlete of the Week for the period of April 27 to May 2, while Gillespie’s contributions have positioned her as one of the Bears’ most productive players heading into the next season.
