Garfield Park Baseball Field Gets Major Upgrade

A $1.2 million investment aims to revitalize youth sports on Chicago's South Side.

Revitalizing Youth Baseball in Garfield Park

A new Little League baseball field is rising in Garfield Park, Chicago, bringing a suite of modern amenities to a neighborhood that has long awaited a dedicated space for the sport. The facility will include artificial turf, a backstop, player benches, bleachers, a warning track, an outfield fence, batting cages, improved stormwater infrastructure and a new asphalt pathway that links the field to surrounding park trails.

The $1.2 million project is financed through a combination of $1 million from the city’s tax increment financing program and a $200,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, ensuring that the upgrades do not burden local taxpayers.

The development is part of a broader citywide effort to upgrade parks on the South and West sides, a program backed by a $1 billion surplus in tax increment financing funds that will also see gym floor replacements at Austin Town Hall Park and Columbus Park.

Local leaders and alumni alike have praised the transformation; former standout Paris Head of Lane Tech College Prep and Aarion Gould of Kenwood Academy, both products of the Garfield Park Little League, credit the league with shaping their athletic and personal growth.

Community advocates Frank Brim and Carlos Ramirez-Rosa were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony, underscoring the collective commitment to nurture the next generation of players and leaders.
