Servite High School has announced a notable reshuffling of its football coaching staff as veteran head coach Rick Garretson taps his own son, Darell Garretson, to lead the offense and appoints Chris Redfern as the new defensive coordinator.
A Family-Driven Coaching Staff
Darell Garretson, a former quarterback who earned his college experience at Utah State and Oregon State before stints at the University of Arizona, will now coordinate the Friars’ offensive schemes, while Chris Redfern, previously an assistant at Golden West College, takes charge of the defense.
Both coordinators will operate with a degree of autonomy that Garretson says reflects his confidence in their abilities, allowing them to shape their units without micromanagement.
Independence and Vision
The move comes after a humbling 0‑4 finish at the Battle at the Beach, where Servite fell to Lincoln, Santa Margarita, Long Beach Poly and Capistrano Valley, a result that has only sharpened the coach’s resolve.
Despite the early‑season setbacks, Garretson remains upbeat, noting that the program is drawing on talent from the state‑champion boys track team and is eager to test its mettle against Corona Centennial in the season opener on August 22.
The coach also highlighted the refreshing feeling of returning to his alma mater, a sentiment that underscores his commitment to rebuilding the program from within.
With the new staff in place, the Friars hope to translate their off‑season preparations into on‑field success as they embark on a campaign that promises fresh energy and strategic depth.
