Garry Herron eyes resurgence as East Alton‑Wood River football readies for 2025 season

After a winless year, the Oilers lean on summer workouts, new assistants and a handful of returning stars to rebuild

East Alton‑Wood River’s football program is entering a pivotal summer, with head coach Garry Herron already mapping out a strategy to turn the page after a winless 2025 campaign.

The Oilers have gathered roughly four dozen athletes for weightlifting and sprint drills, a blend designed to rebuild strength and speed among a roster dominated by freshmen and sophomores.

Returning standouts such as Elijah Spratt, Steven Scroggins and Tavis Brown are expected to anchor the effort, while new faces look to prove their mettle under Herron’s demanding fundamentals.

Adding to the staff, assistant coach Zach Kincade brings fresh perspective, joining a coaching cadre that also includes veteran Todd Laux.

The IHSA’s mandatory dead week will soon pause all activity, but once it ends the team will resume drills with the season opener slated for August 20.

Herron’s tenure has already delivered four playoff appearances in eleven seasons, highlighted by a 2022 run that saw the Oilers finish 6‑4 and capture a Class 4A playoff berth.

A new chapter beckons

With a blend of youthful energy and seasoned guidance, the Oilers hope to rewrite their narrative, aiming for competitiveness that matches the program’s proud history.
