When the first Major League Baseball game is slated for August 13 at the freshly built Field of Dreams ballpark in Dyersville, Iowa, the excitement will be amplified by a symbolic tribute perched above the dugout.
A tribute to a broadcasting legend
The press box at the new venue will be named after Gary Dolphin, the longtime radio voice of Iowa Hawkeyes men’s basketball, recognizing his decades of service to the state’s athletics and communities.
Funding the vision
Iowa businessman and philanthropist Ron Kirchhoff is leading a $500,000 fundraising campaign to make the naming possible, and he has pledged to match every contribution with a charitable gift to Iowa Athletics in Dolphin’s honor.
About half of the goal has already been secured, with additional pledges accepted through the August 13 game, creating a direct link between the fundraising deadline and the inaugural MLB matchup between the Minnesota Twins and the Philadelphia Phillies.
Community impact
The ballpark is the centerpiece of the Bring It Home campaign, which also includes a youth baseball and softball complex, educational programs, and expanded visitor amenities, aiming to revitalize the surrounding area.
Located just 15 miles from the site in Cascade, Iowa, the nearby town will benefit from the increased tourism and community programming planned around the venue.
A lasting legacy
The named press box will stand as a permanent reminder of Dolphin’s impact, echoing the enthusiasm he has broadcast for decades and inspiring future generations of players, fans, and broadcasters.
