Florida’s defensive line has turned a simple barbecue into a cornerstone of its identity, a tradition that has now entered its third year, bringing together past and present players for camaraderie and mentorship.
A tradition born from mentorship
Coach Gerald Chatman launched the D-Line BBQ inspired by his own mentor, Terry Price, who once hosted weekly gatherings for his Texas A&M defense.
The event brings together alumni such as Steven Harris and Carlos Dunlap with current standouts like Brendan Bett and Caleb Banks, creating a rare space for dialogue and mentorship.
Harris noted that today’s players are more engaged with each other than in past seasons, when they often stared at their phones instead of talking.
Carlos Dunlap, a veteran of more than a decade in the NFL, emphasized how the gathering bridges generations, allowing former Gators to pass on lessons learned on and off the field.
Surprise guests and family ties
This year’s barbecue featured unexpected appearances by receiver Dallas Wilson, linebacker Myles Graham and former Gator Percy Harvin, underscoring the program’s ability to unite diverse football personalities.
Caleb Banks, who was selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, returned to present Coach Chatman with an autographed jersey, a gesture that highlighted the community’s appreciation for the coach’s vision.
Injury setbacks and future hopes
The 2024 season saw the defensive line record 39 sacks, ranking fourth in the SEC, but the 2025 campaign dropped to 26 sacks after Banks’ injury limited his contribution.
Despite the setback, the 2026 roster includes returning players Brendan Bett, Kamran James and freshman Jayden Woods, alongside LJ McCray, all aiming to restore the unit’s former dominance.
Coach Jon Sumrall has spoken about the importance of role clarity and team unity, believing that a cohesive defensive line will translate into on‑field success.
