Fall Camp Preview
Florida’s football program will open fall camp on Aug. 5 under head coach Jon Sumrall, who is entering his second season after a whirlwind transition. The coach expressed both excitement and gratitude for the 60 scholarship players who remain from the previous roster of 116, emphasizing the unique carryover that could shape the team’s chemistry.
The Gators face a 12‑game SEC schedule that begins on Sept. 5 with a home matchup against Florida Atlantic, a game that will serve as the first test of Sumrall’s revised system.
Quarterback remains the focal point of early discussions. Tramell Jones Jr. and Aaron Philo are locked in a battle for the starting role, each having posted solid numbers in the spring game — Jones with 210 yards and two touchdowns, Philo with 193 yards, two scores and two interceptions. Behind them, Aidan Warner sits third on the depth chart while Will Griffin is viewed as a player with higher upside.
The receiving corps is arguably the most talented unit on the squad. Transfers Vernell Brown III, Dallas Wilson and Eric Singleton Jr. have joined a group that also features Marcus Davis and Trent McKnight, who are splitting reps in Buster Faulkner’s Air Raid‑inspired scheme. Faulkner, the new offensive coordinator, has designed the offense to maximize the playmakers at his disposal.
Running back duties are expected to flow through Jadan Baugh, who will carry the bulk of the load, with Duke Clark providing depth. Adding a spark of speed, Evan Pryor logged four touchdowns of 55 yards or more last season, giving the backfield a dynamic element.
Along the line, the left‑tackle battle is shaping up among Emeka Ugorji, Eagan Boyer and the potential return of Fletcher Westphal, while Caden Jones, who started 10 games at left tackle a year ago, is also in the mix.
Defensively, the edge‑rusher position will rely on sophomore Jayden Woods to build on a promising first year, while the defensive end competition includes Kamran James, LJ McCray and Emmanuel Oyebadejo. Inside, Brendan Bett, Joseph Mbatchou and Jeramiah McCloud are vying for starting spots at tackle.
Linebackers are anchored by Myles Graham, with Jaden Robinson, Aaron Chiles, Myles Johnson and Ty Jackson offering depth. In the secondary, the cornerback group features Cormani McClain, Dijon Johnson, Ben Hanks II, J'Vari Flowers and Jordy Lowery, a unit that Sumrall is working to steady after an inconsistent spring.
At safety, Bryce Thornton, DJ Coleman, Cam Dooley, Lagonza Haywood and Kanye Clark are expected to be key contributors, providing both experience and playmaking ability.
Special teams will see transfers Patrick Durkin handling kicking duties and Alec Clark punting, both bringing fresh legs from Tulane.
The preseason accolades already roll in, with Vernell Brown III projected as a third‑team All‑SEC returner, highlighting the impact of the new receiving threats.
