Morning Session Sets the Tone
The University of Florida’s football team convened on August 7 at Sanders Practice Fields for its first full‑scale fall practice, a session timed to harness the freshness of early‑morning air before the rigors of the regular season.
First‑year head coach Jon Sumrall, who arrived from Georgia Tech, emphasized a deliberate pace, keeping the squad on the field before the heat of midday sets in and ensuring players arrive at fall camp with optimal stamina.
The quarterback competition took center stage, with redshirt sophomore Aaron Philo and redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr. splitting reps in open drills. Philo demonstrated precision on a wheel route that found running back Jadan Baugh, while Jones Jr. answered with a deep sideline throw to tight end Amir Jackson, showcasing arm strength and chemistry with his primary targets.
Beyond the QB spot, several other battles unfolded. Senior defensive end Kam James, who tied for the team lead in sacks last season with 3.5, returned to full activity, while offensive lineman Fletcher Westphal, a redshirt sophomore, contested for the starting left tackle position alongside Emeka Ugorji and Eagen Boyer. Freshman safety Kaiden Hall and redshirt lineman Jahari Medlock worked separately with trainers, and wide receiver Dallas Wilson, still recovering from foot issues, limited his participation to JUGS‑machine work.
The practice also served as a preview of the season opener against Florida Atlantic, scheduled for September 5 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, commonly known as The Swamp. The Gators will look to translate the early‑season intensity into a home‑field advantage as they begin their campaign.
Offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, who joined the staff this year, continues to shape the scheme, while the team’s depth chart remains fluid. With no official timeline for naming a starter at quarterback, the competition is expected to persist through the preseason, giving fans plenty to watch as the Gators gear up for the first test against the Owls.
