Gavin Gallaher, the sophomore second baseman for the University of North Carolina, has been honored with the Rawlings Gold Glove award presented by the American Baseball Coaches Association, a distinction that crowns him as the nation’s premier defensive player at his position.
Defensive Excellence Redefined
In his debut season at second base, Gallaher has compiled a .983 fielding percentage, ranking seventh nationally among collegiate infielders. He has turned 38 of the team’s 59 double plays, anchoring a defense that stands fourth in the country for double plays turned.
The Tar Heels have recorded 300 chances with only five errors, a statistic that mirrors Gallaher’s .983 fielding percentage. His 19.37 defensive runs saved tops all non‑catchers in Division I, underscoring the magnitude of his impact on the team’s defensive metrics.
A Historic Run to the Championship
Gallaher and the Tar Heels will meet Oklahoma in Game 1 of the national championship series on Saturday at 7 p.m. Eastern in Omaha, Nebraska. This marks the first time since 2007 that North Carolina has reached the championship series, a milestone that adds a storied chapter to the program’s legacy.
The achievement also places Gallaher as only the second UNC player to earn a Rawlings Gold Glove, following Vance Honeycutt, who received the honor in 2024. Their consecutive recognitions highlight a defensive tradition that continues to elevate the Tar Heels on the national stage.
