The San Jose Earthquakes announced this week that Gavin Wilkinson will serve as a consultant focused on roster management until the conclusion of the current season. The move places the former Portland Timbers and Thorns president under the supervision of head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena, who will also lead the club’s post‑season general manager search.
Wilkinson’s appointment comes after a career that blended on‑field success with significant controversy. During his tenure at Portland, he helped guide both the Timbers and the Thorns to multiple league titles, establishing the franchises as consistent contenders in Major League Soccer and the National Women’s Soccer League.
However, his reputation suffered in late 2022 when an internal investigation into alleged sexual harassment by former Thorns coach Paul Riley culminated in Wilkinson’s dismissal. The subsequent Yates report scrutinized his handling of the complaints, though it did not result in formal sanctions beyond his removal.
A short‑lived chapter at Sporting Kansas City further illustrated the volatility of his recent path. Hired as sporting director in early 2024, Wilkinson lasted only eight days before fan opposition forced the club’s hand, leading to his abrupt departure.
Arena, who now oversees both tactical matters and the club’s personnel strategy, will determine how Wilkinson’s consultancy is integrated into the Earthquakes’ operations. The arrangement reflects a willingness by the franchise to leverage his expertise while navigating the shadows of his past.
