A Historic Double
Under the guidance of head coach Chris Adams, the Gaylord High School girls soccer team turned a strong season into a landmark achievement. By capturing both the Big North Conference title and the MHSAA district championship, the squad etched its name into the school’s record books with a feat not seen in over two decades.
The climax came on Saturday, May 30, when the team posted a 4‑1 victory over Petoskey. Sophomore Khloe VanOosten opened the scoring in the first half, and junior Ella Cherwinski added a quick strike shortly after the break. A corner kick from senior Clarie Krajniak was redirected into the net by Emma Horsell‑Sehl, and later Krajniak set up Callie English for the final goal.
The win not only secured the district crown but also highlighted the team’s composure under pressure and its consistent performance throughout the campaign. Key contributors such as Krajniak and Horsell‑Sehl stepped up when it mattered most, delivering moments that defined the season.
Looking ahead, Gaylord will meet Muskegon Reeths Puffer in the regional semifinals on Tuesday, June 2 at Mount Pleasant High School. Should they advance, a potential showdown with either Mount Pleasant or Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central awaits on Thursday, June 4, offering the program its first-ever regional championship.
