GCU Baseball Stars Earn All-Mountain West Honors

Schmidt and Frey recognized for standout performances in first conference season

Grand Canyon University’s baseball program made a splash in its inaugural Mountain West campaign, capturing attention with two standout athletes earning conferencewide recognition.

Schmidt’s Offensive Surge

Junior designated hitter Trevor Schmidt batted .380 in conference play, smashing nine home runs and driving in 28 runs. His power placed him third in the league for homers and slugging percentage, and he delivered clutch moments such as a two‑homer outburst against Fresno State on April 2 and a five‑run burst in the first two innings versus Air Force on April 17. Schmidt capped the regular season with his 10th homer on Senior Day against New Mexico.

Frey’s Dominant Pitching

Left‑hander Chase Frey logged 48 1/3 innings while striking out 51 batters, maintaining a .189 opponent batting average and a 1.08 WHIP. He threw a complete‑game shutout against Fresno State on April 3 and fanned 14 opponents in a win over UNLV. Frey’s performance topped the Mountain West in WHIP and strikeout‑to‑walk ratio, underscoring his command on the mound.

The twin honors highlight how quickly the Lopes have adapted to the new conference, blending offensive firepower with pitching excellence. As the program looks ahead, the recognition serves as a foundation for sustained competitiveness and future success.
