Gene Bess, a towering figure in college basketball, died on June 19 at the age of 91. His son, Brian Bess, broke the news on social media, prompting an outpouring of tributes from friends, family, and fans worldwide.
A career spanning five decades
Over 50 seasons coaching the Three Rivers Raiders, Bess amassed a record of 1,300 wins against 416 losses. He led the Raiders to NJCAA national titles in 1979 and 1992, earned National Coach of the Year honors twice, and guided the team to 17 appearances in the NJCAA National Tournament.
His achievements were recognized by multiple halls of fame. In 2023 he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, having previously entered the NJCAA Hall of Fame in 1989, the Poplar Bluff Sports Hall of Fame in 1983, and the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. A statue honoring his legacy now stands at the Libla Family Sports Complex in Missouri.
Bess retired from coaching in 2020, leaving behind a blueprint for excellence that continues to inspire new generations. Tributes highlighted not only his wins but also his mentorship, integrity, and the deep respect he commanded across the sport.
