A tribute to a mentor whose influence reached far beyond the court

Gene Nakamura, the longtime Berkeley High girls basketball coach whose career spanned 35 years, died on July 4 at the age of 81 after complications from blood cancer. The news was announced by his family, and a celebration of life will be held at Berkeley High on August 8.

Over his distinguished tenure he compiled 563 victories, captured 15 North Coast Section titles, seven NorCal championships and two state crowns, a record that placed him among the most successful coaches in California history.

More Than a Coach

Beyond the scoreboard, Nakamura was known as ‘Coach Nak’ to generations of Bay Area players and coaches. Former star Jualeah Woods recalled how his mentorship reshaped her life, while former WNBA player Alexis Gray‑Lawson said his insistence on playing the game the right way left an indelible mark on her career.

Kelly Sopak, another Hall of Fame coach, expressed gratitude for Nakamura’s discipline and the example he set for younger coaches. Tanda Rucker, a former player, remembered his warm smile and the special bond they shared, and Mitzi Veal, a former student, praised him for being an inspiring and compassionate teacher.

A Lasting Influence

Nakamura’s impact extended into the classroom, where he taught for 35 years in the Berkeley School District, shaping the minds of countless students. He is survived by his wife Diane, daughters Lauren and Lisa, and his grandchildren, who gathered with him for his final game, illustrating his selfless nature.
