A Season of Firsts
The Genoa girls soccer program etched its name into the record books during the 2022 campaign, posting a flawless regular‑season slate and capturing both the league championship and the sectional title. The achievements marked the first league crown in school history and set a new benchmark for future squads.
Head coach Josiah Hanson repeatedly highlighted the team’s chemistry, noting that the players’ camaraderie extended beyond the pitch and forged a culture of accountability and mutual support.
Leadership Returns
Graduation stripped the roster of standout talent, including forward Adrianna Williams, who earned NBC Player of the Year honors, goalkeeper Addi Moritz, and defender Lyla Edens. Their departures left sizable shoes to fill, but the coaching staff sees the departures as an opportunity to reshape the lineup.
Among the returning seniors, Izzy West and Ava Houghtaling earned First Team All‑NBC honors, while Malani Smith received Honorable Mention recognition. Their experience, having started as freshmen, provides a steadying presence as the team looks to repeat past triumphs.
Sophomore Cora Edens will inherit the starting goalkeeper role, stepping into the vacancy left by Moritz’s graduation. Coaches praise her poise and adaptability, expecting her to anchor a defense that remains hungry for success.
With eight returning starters, the squad blends senior leadership with emerging underclassmen. Coach Hanson expressed confidence that the younger players will embrace new responsibilities, ensuring the team’s competitive spirit endures.
The outlook for the upcoming season is cautiously optimistic. By building on the foundation of an undefeated regular season and a historic championship, the Genoa girls soccer team aims to translate momentum into another campaign of excellence.
