George Mason University announced Tuesday that Casey Cathrall will take over as the program’s strength and conditioning coach, bringing a blend of NCAA tournament experience and NBA draft mentorship to the role.
A familiar face returns to the Capital Beltway
Cathrall first crossed paths with the university’s ecosystem while serving under head coach Tony Skinn at Louisiana Tech, where the Bulldogs posted 46 wins in two seasons, and later refined his methods at the University of Dayton, guiding the Flyers to six postseason appearances and a 2024 NCAA Tournament victory.
His journey continued at the University of Miami, where he spent a season under Jim Larranaga before returning to the DMV for a second stint, this time as the new coach at George Mason.
Cathrall’s professional footprint also includes a stint at UMBC, where he directed strength and conditioning from 2014‑15, and a period at Florida International University, expanding his reach across the Southeast.
A culture of grit and competitiveness
The university’s athletic director praised Cathrall’s blend of academic credentials — a bachelor’s in Clinical Health Studies from Ithaca College and a master’s in Exercise Physiology from Miami — and his certifications as a CSCS specialist, noting that his approach aligns with the program’s ambition to sustain excellence both on and off the court.
Cathrall and his wife Grace are parents to two daughters, Lily and Alexandra, and he says the personal support system fuels his professional drive.
