A Rocky Start
Rhode Island struck first with a solo home run in the top of the second inning, taking an early lead. George Mason answered quickly, tying the game later in the same frame when Jake Butler doubled and Julius Bagnerise followed with an RBI groundout.
The momentum shifted in the third inning as Rhode Island exploded for five runs, extending their advantage to 6‑1. The Patriots managed a single run in the bottom of the third, courtesy of an RBI groundout by Owen Clyne, but the gap remained substantial.
Both teams exchanged runs in the fourth inning. Rhode Island added a solo homer, while George Mason responded with a single from Evan Blanchard that brought one run across the plate, keeping the contest within reach.
A six‑run outburst in the top of the sixth inning pushed Rhode Island’s lead to 13‑3. The Patriots’ offense struggled to generate hits, and the Rams continued to pile on.
Rhode Island added four more runs in the seventh inning, stretching the score to 17‑3. George Mason finally found a spark, scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by a two‑run single from Lucas Alberti.
The Patriots trimmed the deficit further in the eighth inning when Alberti drove in another run, making the tally 17‑8. Rhode Island sealed the game with a two‑run homer in the ninth, finalizing the score at 19‑8.
Elimination Game Looms
With the loss, George Mason will enter an elimination match against the winner of the VCU versus Davidson contest, scheduled for 7 p.m. at Capital One Park. The Patriots hope to rally their late‑inning momentum into a comeback.
