The George Washington University women's basketball program announced a three-year agreement with West Virginia that will keep the two schools meeting on a rotating home-and-away schedule through the 2028-29 season. The first contest is slated for November 5, marking the first meeting between the programs since 2023.
A renewed rivalry
The arrangement alternates venues: the Mountaineers will host in Morgantown during the 2026-27 campaign, the Colonials will welcome WVU to Washington, D.C. in 2027-28, and the series will close at Hope Coliseum in 2028-29. Historically the two teams have met 27 times, with West Virginia holding a slight edge at 14-13, though the Colonials enjoyed a five-game winning streak from 1993 to 1995, outscoring the Mountaineers by an average of 25.4 points.
This season the Colonials return five players from last year's squad, highlighted by junior guard Gabby Reynolds, an all-conference third-team selection who averaged 14.6 points per game. Alongside Reynolds, the roster includes transfers Sara Lewis, Kamari Sims, Tanah Becker and Jaeda Wilson, while eight newcomers round out the depth.
West Virginia enters the series with momentum from back-to-back Big XII tournament championships, including the 2024 title, and four straight NCAA Tournament appearances that have featured three consecutive Round of 32 victories. The Mountaineers joined the conference in 2012 and have since built a reputation for postseason resilience.
Fans can purchase 2026-27 season tickets for the GW women's basketball team starting at $70, a price point that reflects the program's deepest WNIT run in school history and the most postseason wins in a single year in nearly three decades.
A renewed chapter for both programs
The agreement not only restores a historic rivalry but also underscores a broader push to elevate women's basketball across the region, blending tradition with future growth.
