Preseason Optimism for the Bulldogs
ESPN’s 2026 preseason power rankings have placed the Georgia Bulldogs at No. 2, a reflection of their 12‑2 record and a 7‑1 mark in the SEC from the previous year. The team capped the 2025 campaign by defeating Alabama 28‑7 in the SEC championship game, earning a No. 3 seed in the college football playoffs.
Although the Bulldogs fell to Mississippi 39‑34 in the Sugar Bowl quarterfinal, the loss did little to dim the optimism surrounding the program. Mark Schlabach noted that Georgia’s preseason No. 2 spot is a direct result of its recent SEC titles and the belief that the roster remains among the nation’s elite.
Key Returners and Coaching Vision
Quarterback Gunner Stockton will enter his senior season as the presumed starter, building on a promising second year as a full‑time starter. The offense also retains playmakers at wide receiver who will be expected to step up and provide the necessary firepower for another playoff run.
Defensively, the Bulldogs boast standout talents such as Chris Cole, Chase Linton and Quintavius Johnson, who are expected to anchor the front seven and secondary alike. Head coach Kirby Smart continues to shape the team’s identity, emphasizing discipline and execution as the program aims to sustain its high standards.
Areas of Concern
One lingering issue is the pass rush, as Georgia finished last in the SEC with only 20 sacks in 2025. Improving pressure will be crucial if the Bulldogs hope to compete with the nation’s top offenses. Additionally, the departure of several key players to the NFL creates questions about depth, especially along the defensive line.
Despite those challenges, the Bulldogs are still viewed as one of college football’s premier programs. The combination of experienced leadership, elite talent and Smart’s proven ability to develop players positions them as a strong contender for another SEC championship and a playoff berth.
