Georgia’s offseason roster got a boost when the Bulldogs secured Dante Dowdell from the transfer portal, adding a seasoned running back to a backfield that already features Nate Frazier and Chauncey Bowens.
Injury Update
But the excitement was tempered by news of a serious ATV accident in Mississippi that left Dowdell hospitalized at the Shepherd Center, where he is undergoing rehabilitation for spinal cord and brain injuries. The facility, known for its specialized care, is now central to his recovery.
Coach Kirby Smart confirmed that Dowdell is showing signs of improvement, yet he stopped short of offering any timeline for a return to the gridiron, stressing that the player’s health remains the top priority.
Roster Adjustments
In Dowdell’s absence, junior Dwight Phillips is poised to shoulder a larger share of the rushing load. Phillips, who amassed 210 yards and a touchdown on 35 carries last season, has been focusing on adding weight and strength to handle an expanded role.
The coaching staff also counts on sophomore Bo Walker and true freshman Jae Lamar, both from Colquitt County, to provide depth at running back alongside Phillips, ensuring the offense retains versatility despite the setback.
Preseason practices are slated to begin on August 5, a date that will mark the first real test of how the Bulldogs adapt without Dowdell’s immediate availability.
