Georgia Man Pretends to Be Basketball Star to Swipe $90,000 BMW

A valet at a Savannah hotel was duped into handing over the keys to a loaner vehicle, sparking a police investigation.

A man in Georgia recently fooled a hotel valet by claiming he was a professional basketball player, prompting the valet to hand over the keys to a gray 2026 BMW X5.

The valet at the Hyatt Regency in Savannah accepted a ticket for the vehicle, believing the driver was storing several cars on the property, even though the car was a loaner worth about $90,000 provided by a local dealership.

Shortly after midnight, the vehicle was driven off the hotel grounds and later reported missing by a guest, while the Audi the suspect used to approach the valet had already been flagged as stolen on August 13.

Investigation Underway

Police have identified the suspect as a Black male between 20 and 30 years old, though his exact height remains unknown, and are pursuing leads after the BMW was traced to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Authorities continue to investigate the case, with the vehicle’s current whereabouts still unclear as of the latest report.
