New Era for GSU Baseball
Georgia State University has received the green light to break ground on a $15.4 million baseball stadium that will rise on the site of the former Atlanta‑Fulton County Stadium in Atlanta. The project is slated for completion by fall 2026 and will anchor a new athletic hub for the campus.
The stadium’s design blends modern amenities with a nod to the city’s baseball heritage, featuring state‑of‑the‑art training facilities, fan‑friendly seating and advanced drainage systems. University President Dr. M. Brian Blake emphasized that the venue will serve both student‑athletes and the broader Atlanta community.
A Tribute to a Legend
Central to the vision is a tribute to Hank Aaron, whose statue will be relocated to the entrance of the new ballpark, ensuring that the legacy of the hometown hero greets every visitor. The dedication reflects GSU’s commitment to honoring its historical figures while forging a forward‑looking identity.
Athletics Director Charlie Cobb noted that the facility will provide a significant boost to the university’s baseball program, offering recruits a premier environment and expanding opportunities for community engagement in the Summerhill neighborhood.
Community and Athletic Benefits
Funding for the endeavor includes contributions from private donors and potential naming rights for the stadium and its playing field, which will be announced pending approval from the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. The partnership aims to secure long‑term sustainability for the project.
Beyond athletics, the stadium is expected to stimulate local economic activity, create jobs and provide a gathering space for residents of the Summerhill community, reinforcing the university’s role as a catalyst for regional development.
